So I played Billy Bob's BBQ and open mic at the Grace Emily Hotel on Monday night. There were a lot of great acts, and little did I know when I got there that it is THE place to be on Mondays...there were literally two hundred people there.
It was just before midnight when I got on, and I think it went fairly well.
I played three songs. I had been planning a mellow set, but a lot of the acts were high energy, so I rearranged it on the spot to be more relevant in a drunken setting.
I opened with "We're All Gonna Die Anyway," which I prefaced with singalong instructions, and to my shock, a fair amount of people sang along through the whole song, despite the fact that my guitar was reportedly so loud (from the previous act) for the first song and a half that people had a hard time hearing the singing...actually, everything was too loud, really. Midway through the second song, the host adjusted the faders and all was well.
It was interesting in that it gave me an idea of what does and doesn't work in a crowded bar when high energy acts are playing three song sets. I mentioned at the myspace blog that the 12/8 song Disobey did not work well in this setting. The two 4/4 songs (I closed with Can't I Dream)seemed to do very well. Noted.
I'm going to try to get back to the BBQ soon...possibly not this week, because I'll be helping Emily prepare for her big return to the States. I'd like to get back this Monday, but I've not really rehearsed anything yet, and I'm going to miss the girl like crazy once she's gone, so might as well get some quality time in while she's here.
Music will be the full-time focus when she's not. I have plans to work on electronic music, play open mics at both the Grace Emily and the Governor Hindmarsh, and I even have an idea for a new concept E.P. that I am very excited about. It's not anything anyone would expect.
